Produktbeskrivning

Tuoteteksti englanniksi:
"Binche, Torchon, Rosaline, Valenciennes, Cantù, Duchesse" - terms which a lacemaker may encounter again and again. But just exactly what is a Duchesse? What does it look like? Where does it come from? How exactly does Duchesse differ from other kinds of lace? How can one recognize it when one has it in one's hand? What kinds of lace are there anyway?

So many questions! The book attempts to answer the most frequent questions about bobbin lace. The author addresses herself always to the "normal lacemaker" who wants to know a little more about the background of her hobby, but lace collectors are also sure to find interesting information here...

All the classical types of bobbin lace are presented: plaited and guipure lace, tape lace, net ground lace and non-continuous bobbin lace. In addition, traditional free-hand folk lace is discussed and some examples of modern lace art. The most important kinds of needle lace are mentioned too.

An introduction provides information about the methods used in this handicraft. We learn a lot about the various kinds of bobbins, lace pillows, lace prickings and threads. Also the historical background of the craft of bobbin lacemaking is described, its origins in the 16th century and its rapid spread over the whole of Europe. Here you may find clear answers to more questions: where and when was bobbin lacemaking developed? What did the first lace and the first lace pillows look like? Who made lace - and for whom? What role did Barbara Uthmann really play?

Coloured illustrations of more than 230 pieces of lace in original size and numerous close-up photographs provide insights into the diversity of bobbin lace. In all the book contains more than 300 photographs, all in colour.
In addition, there are 30 drawings and maps.
